Day One done and dusted

I did have some concerns about falling at the first hurdle, so it was a relief to cross the day-one finishing line at Zennor. I was about 90 mins later than anticipated due to the rocky and wet terrain making for slow going but was pleased that a family welcoming committee had hung on for my arrival, no doubt the meeting point being a pub making them all the happier to wait.

There were surprisingly few people at Land's End and even fewer on the footpath. I did start off with my Energetic Diabetic flag stuck out of the top of my rucksack but that was soon snaffled by the wind and was last seen heading towards New York. By the end of the day, there were only a couple more people aware of my ultimate destination.

At least we are camping on terra firma tonight. Yesterday, we had to be towed off the camping field  having become bogged. The tractor kept pulling the tow-hook out of the bumper as well: it was only when we brought out the WD40 that we got things sorted. Is there anything WD40 doesn't make better?

For those interested in facts and figures, day one was 17.8 miles and took me 7hrs 49mins, so I was hardly breaking records. My step count is somewhere but I can't be bothered digging my watch out of yet another motorhome hidey-hole. For anyone interested in blood sugar counts, I am still awaiting a Freestyle Libre and continue to finger prick. (The Libre is the white circle you see on the back of the arm of someone with diabetes and links with their phone to give regular updates and warnings - more of that as I go along). I started off at 6.8mmol, lunched at 4.6 and finished at 4.8. Probably a little lower than I would have wanted with those last two, but I get good warning signs of impending hypos and knew whereabouts I was - again, more about those readings another day.

Weather looks good for tomorrow - roll on Gwithiam!
