Day 61: Putting my feet up

What a strange feeling it was this morning to have a bit of a lie in and leave my boots and rucksack sat in a dark corner of the motorhome. I think I could grow to like it. After celebrating with Keith and Gill at Dunnet Bay last night, Suze and I headed west towards Thurso, where I had a much-needed haircut. Ironically, the barber was born and bred in Wigan. We’re on the way south now and are parked up tonight at the Falls of Shin. I set out with few objectives other than to enjoy myself, raise some money for Diabetes UK, and prove to others that a diabetes condition need not necessarily restrict anyone’s aims and ambitions. I know the first two have hit their mark and I hope the third has too. I wanted to round off the blog with a few thank yous. One of the things I’ve missed most since leaving work has been a nice note with plenty of bullet points, and this seems like the perfect time to reacquaint myself. - I wouldn’t have got out of Cornwall if I was carrying my own kit, so ther

Day 60 - Crossing the finishing line
What started out as a grey, calm day in Keiss soon turned into glorious sunshine but accompanied by near gale force winds. The Dornoch Bridge I walked across a few days ago was closed to high-sided vehicles and, given the proximity of the John o' Groats Trail to …

Day 59 - The Final Countdown
We were back on the cliffs today, walking from Whaligoe to Wick, although the going underfoot was much easier than the last couple of days, and the climbs were nowhere near as severe. The coastline was just as dramatic, however, with yet more stacks, a few sea arches…

Day 58 - Stacks of Fun
After yesterday's exertions, it was relief to see today's journey was a little shorter, on paper at least. The first mile or so was on the road, before we cut across country to rejoin the coastal path just north of Dunbeath. We were on the cliff tops all morn…

Day 57 - A few steps too far..
In order to make sure I could maximise celebration time on my proposed final day (Wednesday!), I amended my schedule last week to cut that day's mileage from the originally planned 25 miles. Of course, the knock on effect is that those miles have to be walked at …

Day 56 - Never put your money on Wolves
Keith and I were following the coast just about all day today, and the first mile saw us walking around Royal Dornoch Golf Course, of which multi-Major winner Tom Watson once said ‘the most fun I have had playing golf in my whole life.’ You did gain the impression …

Day 55 - Burning up the tarmac
Despite the caravan public of Evanton declining the massaging opportunity I was willing to present them with last night, I was delighted to wake up sciatica free. I am not sure if it was the double dose of ibuprofen or some fairly half-hearted yoga poses but I was …
